The censor is cast in a compressed globular form supported on three short feet. The everted rim is surmounted by a pair of arched handles. The base is cast within a recessed panel with a four-character mark “Changchun Jushi“ (’The Scholar of Everlasting Spring’). The bronze has a predominately dark brown patina. It is fit to a wooden stand carved with ruyi pattern.
The mark on the base is the other name of Qianlong Emperor. This name was given by Yongzheng Emperor in the eleventh year of Yongzheng’s reign when Qianlong was still the prince. Qianlong then attached great importance to the designation “Changchun“ and the numerous “Changchun Shuwu“ (libraries) all obtained their names from this. So it is believed that this censor was commissioned by the prince Qianlong in the period of Yongzheng and was later used in the Qianlong’s personal library.
